Worth knowing first

“Used” and “reconditioned” are not the same word

They get used as though they are, and the difference is most of what you are paying for. This is the part to get straight before you ring anybody.

Used

A lift that has been in someone else’s house. On its own the word tells you nothing about its condition, what has been checked, or what has been replaced.

Reconditioned

Stripped down, worn parts replaced, cleaned, rebuilt and tested before resale. This is what we supply, and it is why a refurbished lift can be a genuinely good buy.

The question to ask

Whoever you ring: what exactly was replaced, who did the work, and what cover comes with it? A straight answer to those three tells you who you are dealing with.

Fitted, not just sold

A lift delivered on a pallet is not a bargain. Ours are surveyed, fitted to your staircase, tested and handed over, with any old lift taken away.

Who it suits

When a used stairlift is the right call

Reconditioned is not a compromise for everyone and it is not right for everyone either. Being independent means we can tell you which you are.

  • Straight staircases — where nearly all reconditioned stock sits, because the rail is cut to length.
  • Budget is the deciding factor — when the real choice is a used lift now or no lift at all.
  • Shorter-term need — after an operation, or while a downstairs room is being converted.
  • A second lift — a short flight to a box room or a cellar that does not warrant new.

Where a curved rail is needed, or the weight is near the limit, new is usually the honest answer and we will say so.

Questions

Used stairlifts: your questions answered

What is the difference between used and reconditioned?
In this trade the words get used interchangeably, but they should not be. A used stairlift is simply one that has been in somebody else’s house. A reconditioned stairlift has been stripped, worn parts replaced, cleaned, rebuilt and tested before it is sold on. What we supply is reconditioned. If you are offered a lift described only as “used”, ask exactly what was done to it.
How much less does a used stairlift cost?
It depends entirely on the model, its age and the length of rail your stairs need, so any figure quoted before someone has seen your staircase is a guess. What we can tell you is that reconditioned is consistently the cheapest route to a quality lift, and for a straight staircase it is often the difference between getting one this month and putting it off. Ring 0800 4647401 and we will tell you what we have.
Can I get a used curved stairlift?
Rarely, and it is worth understanding why. A curved rail is manufactured for one particular staircase and almost never fits another, so there is very little reconditioned curved stock anywhere. Most used stairlifts are straight. If someone offers you a cheap second-hand curved rail, ask very carefully which staircase it was built for.
Is a reconditioned stairlift reliable?
A properly reconditioned lift from a decent maker is a sound buy — these are simple, robust machines and the parts that wear are known and replaceable. The reliability comes from the refurbishment rather than the age, which is exactly why what matters is who did the work and what they replaced.
What cover comes with a used stairlift?
Ask, every time, and get the answer in writing. New Acorn lifts come with a 12-month manufacturer guarantee; cover on a reconditioned unit varies by model and supplier and is not the same thing. We will tell you plainly what comes with the specific lift we are quoting you on.
Do you cover my part of London?
We cover all throughout London. We are based at 4 Hoodcote Gardens, Winchmore Hill, N21, so Enfield, Barnet and Haringey are closest, but we travel right across the capital.
