“Seán quickly diagnosed and fixed an issue with our Acorn curve chair. Wouldn’t hesitate to call again or recommend to others.”
What reconditioning actually involves
Used stairlifts are only worth buying if you know what was done to them. Here is the whole process, and what to ask whoever you end up ringing.
Wear parts out, long-life parts checked
A stairlift is a simple machine, and the things that go wrong on one are well known. Reconditioning used stairlifts is not a cosmetic job — it is replacing the short-life components and verifying everything else.
- Batteries — the single most common failure, and the first thing to go in.
- Charging contacts — where the lift picks up power when parked; they pit and corrode.
- Safety edges — the sensors that stop the lift against an obstruction. Non-negotiable.
- Upholstery and trim — so it does not look like it came out of someone else’s house.
- Drive train — inspected and replaced where there is wear.
Chassis, motor housing and rail are cleaned, inspected and tested rather than swapped. On a decent lift they long outlive everything on the list above.
Where the stock comes from
Used stairlifts are overwhelmingly straight, and there is a simple mechanical reason. A straight rail is a length of extrusion — take it out of one house, cut it to the next staircase, fit it.
A curved rail was bent to the rise, going and radius of one particular staircase. It cannot be re-formed for another, so a second-hand curved rail is only any use to a house with effectively the same stairs. That is why there is almost no reconditioned curved stock, and why you should be suspicious of a cheap one.
If your staircase turns, ask us about new curved options as well. We would rather tell you that than sell you something that does not fit.
Fitted the same way a new one is
We fit used stairlifts exactly the way we fit new ones — surveyed, installed, tested and handed over. The rail bolts to the treads of the staircase rather than the wall, so there is no structural work and no replastering.
Most stairlifts are installed in just a few hours. Like every lift we fit, it runs on electricity with a rechargeable battery system, so it keeps working in a power cut.
- Free survey before anything is quoted
- Bolts to the treads, not the wall
- Full travel, safety edges and seatbelt tested on handover
- Shown and driven before we leave
- Old lift removed, with removal already in the price
